PROJECT TIMELINE

BIA 1: 2020 – 2022 | BIA 2: 2023 – 2025

The BioInnovation Africa project is a project that focuses on UNCTAD BioTrade compliance, as supported by the UEBT standard.

The activities here include, but are not limited to, due diligence, technical advice to the project developers in regard to biotrade and policy, natural resources value chain development and bioprospecting. In general. Specifically the following components are fulfilled:

  • Improving efficiency of national Access Benefit Sharing (ABS) frameworks
  • Supporting conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity through and beyond benefit-sharing
  • Biodiversity- based value chains for sustainable development (partnerships)
  • Reflecting biodiversity-based value chains in development cooperation (advocacy)

Dagmar’s work focussed on the working with the 7 value chains that were established in Namibia, ie:

  • NANCi, Namibian Devil’s Claw Exporters’ Association Trust (NDCEAT), Naturex part of Givaudan and Givaudan Foundation on developing the GACP+ Standard for sustainable devil’s claw trade
  • IRDNC / Kunene Conservancies Indigenous Natural Products Trust and Regenerative Essences on improved market opportunities for biotrade Commiphora wildii resin and Colophospermum mopane ingrdients
  • CRIAA SA-DC on improved market opportunities for manketti biotrade ingredients
  • IRDNC, Parceval and V Mane Fils on Novel essential oils of so far underutilised plant species
  • Eudafano Womens’ Cooperative/ Eudafano Women’s Marula Manufacturing, The Body Shop International, Aldivia, Gustav Heess Group on improved production, productivity and market opportunities for marula oil as a cosmetics ingredient

SEED Namibia and the Marula Guys on market opportunities for marula pulp as a novel food supplement.

Outcome and Impact

The expected outcome here is that communities in possession of natural resources can profit from the development of a natural resource value chains, based on either biotrade and/or bioprospecting principles. The market for these natural resources is developed and the communities can be lifted out of poverty as a result of the income generated from that natural resource, while rights holders (eg rural communities) and users (buyers) become ABS compliant in the national and international context.
