Labour-Based Bush Harvesting Pilot Project
The Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) – Bush Control and Biomass Utilisation (BCBU) supports the Government of Namibia with various initiatives towards the implementation of Harambee Prosperity Plan (HPP) and National Development Plans (NDPs). The current NDPs aims to ‘combat bush encroachment’ for ‘improved rangeland management’ and ‘biodiversity enhancement’.
Outcome and Impact
Bush thickening causes biodiversity loss; loss of income in the agriculture sector and puts pressure on ground water and land resources. The overall aim of the pilot was to conceptualise and benchmark the labour-intensive methodology of bush thinning in Namibia, while striving to achieve NDPs and other political and private sector socio-economic development goals. The aims of the bush harvesting concept was: Measuring the productivity of mainly labour based felling methods to establish an industry benchmark; Restoration of the environment; Creation of employment in rural areas; Increasing the productivity of land; Creating awareness and good reputation around labour-based harvesting; and demonstrate the utilisation of the biomass, in line with good practice and maximum possible value addition within Namibia.
