PELL COOK: Creating a local biomass pellet fuel value chain for cooking and heating

LOCATION

Namibia

SECTOR

Solid Biomass

PROJECT TIME LINE

2020 – 2023

EEP AFRICA FINANCING

EUR 391 600

TOTAL PROJECT BUDGET

EUR 562 800

This fuel-switch project is testing the market for clean cooking in Namibia. This includes setting set up a fuel pellet factory to upgrade biomass from bush thickening species into fuel pellets and selling them as a cost-effective and efficient fuel for cooking and space heating. In addition, Tier 4 cooking stoves are brought to market.

Bush based biomass is harvested from bush thickening species close to the pellet factory, securing supply with minimal logistical costs. In this demonstration project, sustainable fuel in for of pellets together with cookstoves and heating accessories targets poor households in rural and peri-urban off-grid and on-grid areas. The stoves and pellets are distributed through a network of especially women entrepreneurs trained by the project.

PELL COOK has sales outlets in Mayana (Rundu Rural Constiuency), DRC (Swakopmund), Okakarara and Windhoek. Outcome and Impact

  • The project targets a total of 500 poor households, providing 1 950 people with enhanced energy access.
  • This will result in a total of EUR 258 222 in energy savings, produce 1 401 MWh/year of clean energy and reduce GHG emissions by 1 346 tC02e annually.
  • The project also creates at least 26 jobs, over half of which will be for women.
Definitions:

MWh/year – This metric represents the total clean energy used on campus each year, in megawatt-hours (MWh/year).

GHG – A greenhouse gas that absorbs and emits radiant energy within the thermal infrared range, causing the greenhouse effect.

tC02e – Stands for tonnes (t) of carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalent (e).
